• 14" of 1.5 wide grosgrain/circles red (WF14)*
• 8" of 1/8" cord/burlap (SP09)*
• 1.25" x 5.5" strip of mat board or any other thick cardboard
• sewing machine/thread
• 1 small grommet
• grommet setting tool
• 1/8 inch hole punch
* all ribbon can be purchased from www.mayarts.com
step 1 – fold each end of your ribbon down .5" and press with an iron. then fold the ribbon in half and press again. reference example A.
step 2 – pin ribbon (wrong sides) together with ends tucked and sew down each length as close to the edge as possible. use a wide stitch on your machine to avoid puckering.
step 3 – take your mat board strip and insert it into the channel of your bookmark. push the mat board all the way to the bottom so you are left with extra ribbon on top. this should be a snug fit, but depending on how close to the edge of the ribbon you sewed, the sides of your cardboard might need to be trimmed.
step 4 – with your hole punch, make a hole through both sides of your ribbon as shown in example B. remember that your mat board insert will not be this high up. following the package instructions, insert your grommet through this hole and secure into place.
step 5 – take your cord and insert through grommet hole. grab both ends of the cord and secure with an overhand knot close to your ribbon edge.
step 6 – to finish your bookmark, fray the cord by pulling apart each twisted piece and fan out.
