Using Ribbon as a Mask or Stencil

Hello everyone! DeeDee here today with my first official Ribbonista post! I’ve put together a video tutorial for you on using May Arts ribbons as a mask or stencil to create your own textured background.

I used my background, along with some other embellishments and of course more ribbon, to complete this art journal / scrapbook page of the hubs, my kidzilla (only 19 months) and me trying to use a photo booth:

Here you can see a great close-up of that background underneath the webbing:

There are also tons of other May Arts ribbons that could make beautiful masks, so don’t be afraid to experiment! And always let me know if you have any questions, I’d be happy to answer them!

Supplies used include:

  • May Arts Webbing : WQ10
  • May Arts Burlap String: SM08
  • Gesso and a palette knife
  • Your choice of paper (I went with a white background but you could use a beautiful pattern, too!)
  • Tattered Angels Glimmer mist in Turquoise Blue and Chalkboard in Charcoal
  • Floral Beads
  • A clear fast drying glue

I love the texture you created with the ribbon, especially contrasted with the clear, water-like beads!  Awesome with the ribbon overlay!  Thanks for the tutorial!
