{tutorial} gingerbread aprons

There’s always a lot of hustle and bustle around the Piggy Bank Parties office during the Christmas season. Somehow though, I always find time to create handmade gifts for our family and friends to show them how special they are. Creating gifts also allows me keep a few more pennies in my piggy bank for those unexpected holiday expenses!

Gather the following supplies:

  • 5 feet of May Arts Ribbon: Item # 351-33
  • 4 feet of May Arts Ribbon: Item #330-01
  • Brown Dishtowel
  • Buttons
  • Scissors
  • Sewing Machine, Needle & Thread

Ready? Here we go…

1.  Fold the 2.5” brown ribbon in half lengthwise and iron.

2.  Fold the ribbon ends down ¼” and iron.

3.  Find the center of the ribbon. Pin the ribbon to the long edge of the dishtowel making sure the towel in centered on the ribbon. The excess ribbon on both sides of the towel will create the ties.

4.  Sew the ribbon edges together and onto the dishtowel to create the waistband and ties.

5.  Pin 2 feet of the white ric rac to the bottom edge of the dishtowel and 2 feet of ric rac along the waistband.

6.  Sew the ribbon on and embellish with the striped ribbon.

7.  Attach buttons down the center of the dishtowel. I used a red button stacked on a white button which reminded me of red hots and white frosting.

I created another apron by attaching the second length of ric rac near the bottom of the apron and adding multi-colored buttons.

To make an apron for a little kitchen helper, I used a $.49 napkin from the clearance section. I added turquoise ric rac (Item #330-94) and candy-colored buttons. The waistband and ties were created using chocolate satin ribbon (Item #HA33).

The Gingerbread Aprons were so much fun to create! I hope you’re inspired to create one for yourself or someone special. Speaking of being inspired, I love reading comments from YOU, our faithful May Arts blog followers. Here’s a little thank you for all of your inspiring comments…
