Stamping on Ribbon {winner & a giveaway}

What a perfect combination, the cute and sweet Lawn Fawn stamps and May Arts Faux Linen Ribbon! There are so many different projects you could make with the two, but today I wanted to showcase stamping on ribbon, with a few tips and tricks.

May Arts currently offers eleven different colors of the 1.5 inch wide faux linen ribbon, so you can choose your color based on the Lawn Fawn images in the stamp set of your choice. My choices included the beautiful aqua, pink and olive ribbon and Lawn Fawn’s Flutter By Stamp Set. To complete the project, you will also need some watermark ink, black embossing powder and markers.

To start, stamp your images with the watermark ink onto the wide ribbon. The fibrous nature of the ribbon is great for stamping, as it holds the ink and doesn’t wipe off. Sprinkle the embossing powder over the images and shake off the excess powder. Here’s a tip: if you are working with light ribbon and dark embossing powder as I have, grab both ends of the ribbon and pull taut a couple of times to snap off the excess embossing powder. Here’s one more tip: use a dry paintbrush to wipe away excess powder. Next, heat the powder. The powder does not end up shiny or raised as it would on paper, but it does leave a saturated, crisp image. Finally, color the images with markers, being careful to not go right to the edge of the image to allow for a slight bleed. The embossing powder does a great job preventing bleeds. After I stamped the ribbon, I attached each of the lengths to a dry embossed panel and then to a card base. I stamped a sentiment from various Lawn Fawn sets in a banner format to complete each card.

So here are my final projects!

And you can even do a masculine version as well. Here’s a card with the olive ribbon.

I hope you were inspired to try customizing your linen ribbon as well!

    Thanks for sharing this technique and the helpful tips.  Will it work on other kinds of ribbon like satin, or only on the linen?

    • June 7, 2012

      Kathryn, I believe when you heat satin ribbon, it shrinks the fiber, and the ink from stamping wouldn't be as permanent, so that is why I love the faux linen ribbon so much!
