First, she is guest posting up on the Paper Crafter's Library site!  Here is a little sneak peek of her project:

Erin here, summer season is coming and it’s time to think about giving those special Fathers in our lives a gift to say thanks.  My project today take a set of bbq tools, gifted to me by my insurance agent, and gives them the ribbon treatment to create a unique Father’s Day present.

To start with get some basic bbq tools, May Arts burlap ribbon and burlap string, scor-tape and some scissors.  Start by adhering a layer of scor-tape to the base of the tool and then wrap the burlap around it twice, adding an additional layer of tape to each layer.  Next lay down a smaller section of tape (the burlap is 4 inches wide, so I’d recommend somewhere between 2 ½ inches to 3 inches of tape.  Start the burlap string on one end and wrap around the tool until you cover the section of tape.  If you didn’t want to use as much string, I’d recommend a smaller section of tape.  Finally tie the string in a knot and hide under one of the many strands, tucking in the loose end.

No gift is complete without a card!  For this card I took pieces from the Authentique Strong set, May Arts woven burlap ribbon, burlap string, distress stain and some stamps.  Start by cutting your patterned paper into pieces and finding the right accessories from the paper set.   Add some white stain to the kraft piece of paper and stamp the postmark details before adhering the ribbon pieces to the card stock.  Assemble the pieces together, using a few foam dots to gibe a bit more dimension to the card.

To complete the project create a coordinating tag and wrap the bbq tools together with tie it all together with the woven burlap ribbon in a square knot.

To make this pleat, mark the back of the ribbon with a light colored pencil, where your folds will be.  To determine how far apart to space the marks, measure how wide your ribbon is.  Make one cardboard template the width of your ribbon, and one template half the size of your ribbon.  So, if you are working with 2” wide ribbon, you would have one template that is 2” and one that is 1”.  Using these as your guides, alternate marking with the two sizes (2”,1”,2”,1”, etc.) I used a bright red sharpie, so you could see what I’m doing.

Pleat the ribbon so that after the full width mark (in this case 2”), the fold will be like a mountain fold, and after the half width (1”) – the fold will tuck under the larger fold.  This will create a knife-edge pleat.  Use straight pins to hold the pleats in place.

  Then go back and hand  stitch a small stitch in the center of the pleat to hold in place.   After the width of ribbon is completely tacked down, you are ready for the next step.

Take the corner of the pleats, and fold both sides to the middle (where the tack stitch is).  Tack the two corners down to form a triangle.  Continue this along the length of the ribbon.

I added my fancy pleated ribbon across the bottom of a layout – but it would be fantastic so many other ways!  It would look wonderful on a straw hat,  a pillow – Maybe even woven into a bracelet.

We’re going to turn this: (nothing against the Jonas brothers  , of course!) ($.50 on clearance at the drugstore)

Into this happy little writing spot with a little help from May Arts Ribbon, BasicGrey paper and a few beads and findings.

The fun bookmarks stay on the front of the notebook with a little help from some tiny magnets.

You can make one for every little (or big) writer on your list in no time!

First, remove the coil.  This one is plastic but the technique is the same for metal as well.  Just straighten the bend on one side of the coil and spin the coil out of the holes. Set aside.

Next, I traced the front and back covers onto scrap pieces of chipboard making sure to mark the holes on one side.

Cover the front with Scor-Tape making sure to go all the way to the edges so your paper won’t curl up, then place the designer paper over the chipboard and press firmly.  Trim with scissors.  Punch the holes.

I used a Crop-a-dile to make the holes in the new covers making sure to punch in the same spots and the sample.  Repeat for insides and back covers.  Replace the coil.

I made some fun ribbon bookmarks using May Arts new Lightweight Faux Canvas ribbon to add to my notebook.  You’ll find the tutorial for the bookmarks here.

I used jewelry glue to attach small round magnets to one end of each bookmark so that they could be attached to the front of the notebook. The opposite pole magnet was attached to the front of the notebook with glue.  I covered the magnets with a sticker so the notebook looks nice even with the bookmarks removed.

The inside has to be fun too so I cut some of the cute images from the designer paper and ran them through my Xyron to create custom stickers for the inside and the backside too!

Staple a few strips of ribbon throughout the notebook for added color.
