Day 2 of May Arts / October Afternoon Blog Week!
5 & Dime Party Favors
The 5 & Dime collection from October Afternoon has that vintage vibe that I love so much! When the May Arts/October Afternoon swap box landed on my doorstep, I immediately thought of creating some kitschy party favors using some cotton drawstring bags I had recently purchased from Kraft Outlet. I filled the decorated bags with treats and trinkets like salt-water taffy, some glass pebble magnets, and an adorable charm bracelet that I made using the 5 & Dime collection. But the possibilities are endless!
The cotton drawstring bags I used already had a simple cord in them, but I jazzed them up with May Arts 1.25” red silk ribbon. Simply remove the cord from the bag. Make the slits for the drawstring a little larger if needed. Stick a pin with a head through the end of an 18” length of red silk ribbon and use it to thread the ribbon through the channel. Instantly prettier!
To decorate the bags, cut out some 5 & Dime image and border rub-ons and use your fingernail or a burnishing tool to carefully transfer them onto the front of the cotton bags. The 5 & Dime rub-ons go on very easily and the texture is amazing. Now the plain cotton bags look like vintage feed sacks!
To make the magnets you’ll need:
- Clear Glass Pebbles with a flat back {about 1 ½” in diameter}
- Magnetic Buttons with adhesive
- 1 ½” paper punch
- Glossy Accents
Instructions:
Punch out images from the Root Barrels Cardstock. Spread a thin, even layer of Glossy Accents on the circle then glue to the back of the glass pebble. The pebbles are not perfect circles, so you may need to use a craft knife or sharp detail scissors to remove any excess paper on the edges. Set the pebbles aside to dry for a couple of minutes, and then add a magnetic button to the back of each one. I added a bit of Glossy Accents to the magnetic buttons to be certain they were secure. I made lots of these glass magnets because they are so fun! A set of four in one of the decorated bags makes a perfect gift or favor.
The next favor I created is my favorite one: a kitschy charm bracelet!
To make the charm bracelet you’ll need:
- A variety of 5 & Dime embellishments like Chip ‘n Stick chipboard pieces and Rubber Charms
- A charm bracelet and jump rings
- Crop-A-Dile or an awl to punch holes in the embellishments and turn them into charms
The embellishments have adhesive on the back, so you can cover them with paper or sprinkle a bit of baby powder on the back of them so they won’t be sticky. The adhesive on the rubber charms will just roll right off very easily.
Punch a small hole in the top of each embellishment/charm and use the jump rings to attach them to the bracelet.
These little favor bags would be so much fun at a bridal shower or as wedding favors! The charm bracelet would be a sweet gift for a flower girl or younger bridesmaids.
