Ribbon trimmed easter basket

Easter Basket -  I found an inexpensive, cute little basket that came with some not so cute ribbon tied in a bow. I took out the old and replaced it with MAY ARTS  361 crochet lace and 363 twisted burlap.  I simply knotted the burlap onto the lace and then wove the two around the basket.

Easter Grass - Oooops.  I forgot to buy Easter Grass, no problem.  Just use ribbon!  (365 solid stripes) I kept long lengths of the stripe and added some 1/2 yard strips to mimic blades of grass.

Easter Eggs -  The paper mache egg is very versatile!  For the eggs here I colored all over the eggs with water color pencil and blended in with a paintbrush.  Using double stick tape, I adhered (350 sheer/ruffle edge) a ribbon band around the eggs.  These eggs have a tie-dye look that teens will love to make.  And these eggs won’t spoil!

pleated ribbon pillow

PLEATED RIBBON makes a tailored frame around a button-strewn pillow.
.

striped ribbon
This stunning 2” striped ribbon – May Arts # 365-2-10 – needed to show its decorative potential.  A pleated pillow edging makes that happen.  Of course, the ribbon could also be gathered for a softer, less formal, look.

It is important to use a reversible ribbon for this project, as both sides are visible.

.

MATERIALS:

  • 16” pillow form
  • ½ yard fabric (fabric shown is from the French General collection by Moda)
  • 6 yards 2” RIBBON  (May Arts #365-2-10)
  • Basic sewing supplies
  • Decorative buttons optional

.

pleated ribbon pillow

.

INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Iron fabric and cut into 2 pieces 16” square (this will result in a 15 ½” square pillow which will fit snugly without wrinkles or empty rabbit-ear corners).
  • Place one fabric square, FACE UP, on a flat surface
  • Pleat the entire ribbon by making light pencil marks as shown in Illustration #2.
  • Crease ribbon straight across at *’s and fold to “O”, as shown in Illustration #3.
  • Pin and repeat

  • To secure pleats, baste slightly less than ¼” from ribbon’s edge.
  • Pin the basted, pleated ribbon along the entire edge of the first 16” fabric square – as shown in Illustration #4.

.

  • Place the second 16” fabric square FACE DOWN onto the decorated square.
  • Pin together, taking care not to catch any of the ribbon.
  • Stitch 3 sides of the pillow using a ¼” seam allowance.
  • Stitch 3” from each end of the 4th side, leaving a 10” opening.
  • Turn right side out to make sure that all of the pleated ribbon is free from the stitching.
  • Turn back to the inside and trim corners and make any necessary stitching repairs.
  • Insert the 16” pillow form and close the opening by carefully folding the 2 raw edges under ¼” and stitching closed by hand or machine.

Ribbon Party

Please welcome our next guest blogger, Jennifer Harrison!  She was the winner of our "For The Love Of Ribbon" Valentine's Challenge, with her adorable Valentine's pillow.   Take the time to visit Jennifer at her blog, www.hopefulhomemaker.com, where she shares her adventures in creativity as well as raising 8 young children.   We had so much fun working with Jennifer and hope you enjoy her post as much as we did:

Ribbon Party!

Most of us would love to throw a lovely party:  baby shower, birthday, holiday, luncheon, or just a nice dinner.  The hard part is figuring out how to pull it all together attractively in a reasonable amount of time and for little money.

Whenever I want to take my home from everyday to special, I turn to ribbon.  I've found it's a great way to create a festive atmosphere at the last minute, and very inexpensively.  For this post, I thought I'd spotlight just a few ways you can use a bit of ribbon to dress up some ordinary things that we all have on hand.

The first thing I do is choose a color scheme.  This is often dictated by the event I'm planning for.  Then I get several yards of ribbon that coordinate with one another and with the mood I'm seeking.  For this little luncheon, I chose ribbons that were white, turquoise and aqua.

For my centerpiece I decided to use candles.  I wandered around my house and collected all the white candles I had, then taped a strip of ribbon around each one.  Arranged on a platter, they look lovely.  You could also do this with jars, and fill them with fresh flowers or candy.

Ribbon candles

.
I found a piece of white fabric to use as a table runner.  I cut two lengths of ribbon to place along the edges of the fabric.  I didn't even sew it on, just laid the ribbon out and used a few pieces of double sided tape to hold it together.

ribbon tablerunner

.
I then set the table, and used pieces of ribbon sewn into a circle as my napkin holders.  This is a great idea especially for larger gatherings.  You can make napkin rings that match the event for large groups of people, and storing them takes almost no room!  This would work well for holiday dinners.  I simply used paper napkins and plain white plates.  For a large group I would even use paper plates for easy clean up.

ribbon napkin holder

.
I used more ribbon to embellish a small favor box with a little gift for my guests.

ribbon favor box

.
Now the table looks party-ready, and ribbon is the key ingredient!

ribbon table

.
To make the atmosphere even more festive, try making a ribbon garland.  I will show you two different options, both simple and fast, that create two different but pretty looks.

For the first garland, I decided to make 7 flags that were 10 inches long and 7 inches wide at the top.  I cut a piece of fabric that was 10 inches wide and 28 inches long.  Then I simply sewed ribbons onto the fabric.

ribbon fabric

.
After attaching the ribbon, I carefully cut my fabric into triangles.

ribbon cutting

.
I turned the triangles right side up and had 7 flags in alternating patterns.

ribbon flags

.
I then cut a long length of ribbon and folded it in half (I ironed mine).  I placed the flags inside at evenly spaced intervals and pinned them in place.  I then sewed along the entire length of the ribbon.

ribbon flag

.
Done!

ribbon garland

.

Just for fun, here's another kind of garland that can literally be put together in less than 5 minutes.  I chose three ribbons:  white, aqua, and turquoise.  For this garland, I used the new faux linen ribbon that May Arts just came out with, and I cannot say enough about how wonderful it is!  I think it's my new favorite, and wish I had some in every color.

ribbon garland

.
For my garland, I put the white ribbon on top, then the aqua, and then the turquoise.  I made the aqua piece a couple of feet longer than the white, and the turquoise a couple of feet longer than the aqua.  I found the center of each piece and attached all three together at this point.  You can do this with a glue gun, a couple of stitches, or even some well-concealed paper clips.  Then I took the ends of the ribbon and lined them up evenly with one another, and attached all three lengths again about 18 inches from the ends of the ribbon.   Do this on both ends.  You're done!  Now hang your lovely 5 minute garland for all to see.

ribbon garland

.
I found that this garland was very elegant looking.

So there it is.  Picture perfect, and all it took was ribbon!

ribbon garland

.
Next time you want to throw a party, don't hesitate.  Instead of thinking about what you DON'T have, walk around and take stock of what you DO have.  Dress it up with some pretty ribbon, and you've got it made.  There's no limit to the ways you can make your party festive if you've got ribbon!

Thank you, May Arts, for the lovely ribbon you manufacture, and for this opportunity to share my ideas with your readers!

Our challenge entries are coming in!   Please take the time to browse through everyone's designs:

This notepad was sent to us by Janet Harrington:

"This is my beautiful Ribbon Notepad for the porch. If a friend comes calling while you are away, they can leave you a note easily.  I used a piece of heavy mat board, cit a slit in the middle to accommodate the notepad.  Then covered the mat board by wrapping the ribbons around the outside and thru the slit. I used fuchsia and a bright yellow.  Then I made some blue ribbon roses and a piece of twine to hold the pen so it stays put."

.

This travel bag was sent to us by Tam O'Connell:

"I loved matching Spring fabric with the Beautiful ribbon from Maya Arts. I made a sturdy travel bag to carry everywhere from summer to fall. I used  the ribbon not only to embellish (love how my flowers turned out!) but as binding to dress up the exterior seams. This all purpose bag has lots of pockets to carry magazines, books, water bottles, a phone, and of course my goodies from my shopping trips. I also made a mat, for a seat cover, that fits easily in a side pocket, and for impromptu picnics. I used a Dept. store bag as my pattern for the right fit. I can carry this and not only be green but be colorful and super cute all season!"

This two part video was sent to us by Roxanne Furlong. She talks about her mini album entry:

.

This trinket box was sent to us by Denise Bryant:

"This trinket box was fun to put together. I lightly sponged grass and sky colors onto the box for a background, and painted the wooden picket fence with Distress crackle paint to prepare it. I wove the leaf trim through the fencing and glued it into place on the box. After that dried well, I embellished it with the pastel silk ribbon flowers that I had stitched beforehand. The box lid was done using paper grass material in a pretty spring green color, the birdhouse, little bird, and a small twig from my yard glued into place. As finishing touches I added the bow to the top of the birdhouse and the painted wooden beads for legs to raise the box slightly."

These banners were sent to us by Samantha Sibbet of More Paper Please:

"This Saturday, April 3, my husband and I are celebrating our 10 year wedding anniversary with our family and friends by having a big BBQ at a park.  We rented the pavilion and I have created 5 banners that are 17 feet long.  I used the May Arts ribbon on one of the banners as part of the ties and on another as ties between each doily to bring more color to the decoration.  I set the two banners up in my backyard for this photo since the party isn't until after the due date!"

This picture frame & jar was sent to us by Jennifer Hadder:

"Mother's Day frame:
I started with a picture frame I bought on clearance. It has some cushion and I thought it would hold the ribbon in place nicely. I layered the ribbon around the edges and then put it back together. I loved the green backing and though it would look very nice with the rich purple ribbon. I printed off a poem from the internet, and viola, a nice present for my mom for Mother's Day.

My Ribbon Fund:
I knew what I wanted to do in making a jar to hold change. I started with an empty cottage cheese container but the way the sides sloped down, I had a hard time getting paper to fit just right. Then I emptied a jar of peanut butter and saw the sides were straight all the way down. I quickly cleaned it and started working on my change jar. I loved how it turned out and can't wait to fill it so I can purchase more ribbon because I love ribbon so!!"

This vase & tussie mussie was sent to us by Susan Ikin:

"The vase consists of an empty jar with straight sides. Sheer green ribbon is attached to the jar in a single layer, and then the white floral cutout is attached over the top of the sheer green. At the top of the jar are two layers – one of the sheer green and one of the pink sheer with butterflies. Both these were gathered using the wires in the edge of the ribbons. They were then attached to the jar.

The tussie mussie posy holder  is made with a quarter circle of card covered with sheet music.  A little butterfly sheer wrapped of some solid pink and white stripes, with a sheer handle. Some loops of various ribbons fill the top, and it is filled with little Easter eggs."

These altered easter eggs & basket was sent to us by Veronica Gaona:

"Easter eggs using May Arts ribbons to "jazz" them up a bit and a little ribbon tied to the side.  If you try this, be sure NOT to glue along the opening so the little ones can still get to the goodies inside!"

Silk ribbon and cards

Right now I am in love.  Yes, with mini cards and the luxurious, beautiful May Arts silk ribbons.   I know…it is a little odd to form such an attachment to teeny cards and silk ribbon. It’s just the way I am!

This ribbon.  Delicious.  It is oh so soft, and absolutely gorgeous.  It is used in the ribbon roses post.  If that looks a bit too challenging for you, here is where the mini card love comes in!  Easy as Pie -- Pie bought at a bakery, that is!  Often I tie my little cards with May Arts burlap string.  The silk makes these cards extra special!

The mini card. (sigh) These little babies are quick.  Quick to make, quick to jot down a tiny note…and they are wonderful to receive.  Win/win!  Even when you are in a hurry, the thought still counts and these are thoughtful!
.

FAST, EASY, SIMPLE INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Cut paper
  • Fold paper
  • Tie ribbon
  • Done!

For a more in depth look:

Silk ribbon & cards

I like to use scraps of double-sided patterned cardstock.  This adds that little something extra to your card.  Kicking solid paper up a notch!
.

Silk ribbon & cards

If a sentiment seems appropriate for your cards, use a stamp on another little scrap-I like to stamp onto patterned paper with a light grid or worn look - this will add a bit of depth and texture to your card. Then punch it out and adhere to your card base.  (stamps, ink and punches from Stampin’ Up!)
.

Silk ribbon & cards

If you are not a paper junkie like me with years worth of scraps, download a pattern, like the two above. I bought them from Studio 71 Design and I printed them on white textured cardstock and on Kraft Colored card stock.   If you are a paper junkie like me you can still download a pattern, it works fabulously with the silk!  And you can select your own color palette!
.

Silk ribbon & cards

Cut the paper.
.

Silk ribbon & cards

Score your paper with a bone folder or your hands or for professional folds, I use a Scor It board.
.

Silk ribbon & cards

Most of my minis are about 3 inches square once they are folded.  The downloaded cards are 2 inches once folded.
.

Silk ribbon & cards

An idea for a festive look, punch a hole at the top and to the side of the card.
.

Silk ribbon & cards

Then I tie a ribbon in a knot (or a bow would look great, too).
.

Silk ribbon & cards

Or I will tie 3, 4 or 5 knots!  Depending on the card.
.

Silk ribbon & cards

a look inside at the double-sided paper…it just adds a little pop!
.

Silk ribbon & cards

Sometimes I like to give my cards bundled together, scored but not pre-folded.  That way they fit easily in a desk drawer. This makes a nice last minute gift.
.

Silk ribbon & cards

Sometimes I add lots of ribbons to the bundles!
.

Silk ribbon & cards

So many variations to this simple card. You can tie your ribbon any direction in knots or bows.  Make your sentiment pop out from your card with a foam dot adhesive.
.

Silk ribbon & cards

Small Envelopes are available through Stampin’ Up! Or can be found at Clear Bags.
.
Have a mini card making party soon.  Keep them on hand and use as a gift tag, or use for any occasion from birthday card to thank you note.  Slip a card in a lunch bag or even give one to yourself!
